The body of a Russian mountaineer was found Wednesday by the Chamonix high-mountain gendarmerie unit. The hiker was trapped in a crevasse on a glacier in Haute-Savoie. The search, which mobilized rescuers for almost two days, ended in the Mont Blanc massif.
A solitary hike with tragic consequences
The victim had embarked on this glacier hike alone, a practice that multiplies the risks in the high mountains. Crevasses pose a constant danger to mountaineers, even experienced ones, when they are climbing without ropes or a guide.
The weather conditions and the particularly rugged terrain of the area complicated the rescue operations. Specialized gendarmes had to deploy significant resources to locate and then access the hiker's body, trapped in the glacial crevasse.
