A 16-year-old boy drowned Sunday evening in the Clain River in Poitiers. The tragedy occurred shortly after 20 p.m. while the young man was swimming in the river. Despite the rapid intervention of emergency services, he could not be revived. The precise circumstances of the accident are still under investigation.
This death adds to a series of particularly deadly drownings recorded since the beginning of the weekend. In just a few days, several teenagers have died in different regions of France while swimming in rivers, at leisure parks, or in unsupervised areas.
The heatwave raises fears of an increase in accidents
On Saturday, a 17-year-old died in the Dordogne River after being swept away by a current. The same day, a 16-year-old drowned in Dunkirk. In Besançon, two boys, aged 11 and 13, also lost their lives in the Doubs River. On Friday, another 17-year-old died after swimming at a water sports center in Seine-et-Marne.
As the entire country enters an exceptional heatwave, authorities fear a surge in accidents. According to Public Health France, 409 people died by drowning during the summer of 2025, a 16% increase in one year. Among them were 57 children and teenagers, highlighting that impromptu swimming remains one of the main dangers during periods of intense heat.
