The Immigration Observatory published a groundbreaking study on Friday concerning demographic trends in France during the 21st century. These projections, covering the coming decades, aim to anticipate changes in the French population. This exercise is part of a broader national foresight initiative called "France 2035, France 2050," launched last October.
A state-led foresight exercise
Magda Tomasini, Director of the Evaluation, Foresight and Performance Department at the Ministry of National Education, led a specific section dedicated to demographic challenges projected for 2035 and 2050. This focus aims to rethink solidarity within the context of a changing French society. Public authorities are seeking data to adapt public policies to the realities of tomorrow.
This research comes at a time when French demographic trends remain driven by a dual dynamic. Between January 2021 and January 2022, the population residing in France increased by 270,000 people, resulting from a natural increase of 80,000 individuals and a net migration of 190,000. The scenarios presented in the Observatory's study should help inform the debates on the country's future.
