Electric cars: BYD is poised to take the lead in the global market against Tesla

Chinese automaker BYD is poised to become the world's leading seller of all-electric vehicles by 2025, surpassing American company Tesla. Based on the latest figures and analyst forecasts, the gap between the two groups now appears too large to close in the short term.

By the end of November, the Shenzhen-based group had already sold more than two million electric vehicles, an unprecedented milestone in the sector. Tesla, for its part, had just over 1,2 million deliveries by the end of September, despite a temporary surge linked to the end of a tax credit in the United States that had boosted its sales in the third quarter.

A growing divide between the two rivals

The outlook for the last quarter and the following year confirms this trend. Several banks anticipate a significant slowdown in Tesla deliveries, particularly in North America and Europe, while BYD continues its international expansion to compensate for a more cautious Chinese market. The Chinese group's strategy relies in particular on establishing factories outside of China to limit the impact of tariffs.

Faced with increased competition, a less favorable political climate, and a tarnished image in some markets, Tesla is now focusing on developing autonomous driving technology and launching new models to revive demand. But in the short term, analysts believe that current momentum positions BYD as the undisputed leader in the global electric vehicle market.
