Glass manufacturer Arc has filed for bankruptcy protection after its difficulties worsened.

Arc France, a long-established player in the glass tableware market, has announced that it has filed for receivership with the commercial court. The company cites a sustained deterioration in its business conditions, marked by declining demand and persistent pressure on production costs.

Based in Arques, in the Pas-de-Calais region, the glassmaker still employs nearly 3,900 people at its main industrial site. Despite its local economic importance and international presence, the group has struggled for several years to regain a stable financial balance.

A precarious situation despite public support

Arc had, however, benefited from several financial restructurings, including a state-backed refinancing plan a year ago. These measures were not enough to offset the impact of international competition, energy inflation, and changing consumption patterns.

The legal proceedings must now allow for an observation phase to be opened in order to assess the prospects for recovery of the group and the industrial options that can be considered to ensure the continuation of the activity and the preservation of employment.
