The incumbent mayor of Cayenne, Sandra Trochimara, won the municipal elections by a landslide in the first round. Her "Let's Stay the Course" list garnered 72,4% of the vote, a particularly high score for the capital of French Guiana. This result allows her to easily retain the mayoralty and begin a new six-year term.
Senator Marie-Laure Phinéra-Horth, the city's former mayor from 2010 to 2020, trailed far behind with 13,52% of the vote. The other candidates received very little support: lawyer Olivier Taoumi garnered 5,81%, Bernadette Duclona-Constant 5,44%, and Fabien Covis 2,82%.
A victory celebrated in the streets of the capital
Upon the announcement of the results, Sandra Trochimara's supporters gathered in the streets of Cayenne to celebrate her victory. Car parades, music, and dancing accompanied the arrival of the re-elected mayor at her campaign headquarters in a festive atmosphere.
In the opposing camp, disappointment reigns. Marie-Laure Phinéra-Horth conceded defeat while acknowledging her opponent's victory. The former mayor nevertheless affirms her intention to continue her political involvement with her team, which will now occupy the ranks of the opposition on the city council.
