The government announced on Wednesday the implementation of a national plan to combat the Asian hornet, an invasive species that directly threatens bee colonies. Approved by Parliament in 2025, this plan aims to structure a fight that has so far been fragmented among local authorities and field workers. The stated objective is to replace isolated initiatives with nationwide coordination.
A 3 million euro fund for the territories
The government is allocating an exceptional sum of €3 million for 2026 to help local areas cope with the invasive species. This funding will finance nest destruction operations and support local authorities in implementing their local plans. The authorities acknowledge that the fragmentation of resources has long hampered the effectiveness of interventions.
The Asian hornet, which arrived in France about twenty years ago, has become permanently established in most regions. Its repeated attacks on beehives are further weakening an already struggling beekeeping industry. Professionals in the sector have long been calling for government intervention to organize a coherent response to this formidable predator.
