An attempted pickpocketing in the streets of London had a most unusual outcome. An American tourist had her cell phone snatched while filming a TikTok video. Bad luck for the thief: he had no idea he was targeting a top-level sprinter. This attempted robbery took place in broad daylight in a busy area of the capital.
Bad luck for the thief: the woman was Elizabeth Lopez Aguilar, an athlete from 24 years old from Texas.
At first, the young woman thought it was a joke. However, she quickly realized it was a robbery and instinctively gave chase to the suspect, accompanied by her partner. A regular participant in sprint and triathlon competitions, she was able to use her intensive training to catch up with the man in just a few minutes and retrieve her phone.
No legal action was taken.
According to her testimony, the confrontation took place without violence. The tourist stated that she had neither contacted the police nor initiated legal proceedings, explaining that "The man offered no resistance and left immediately once we retrieved the phone."The case therefore concluded without an arrest, despite the direct intervention of the victim.
This type of opportunistic theft remains common in major European cities, particularly London. Authorities nevertheless recommend against attempting a chase and instead advise reporting the theft to the police.
