A man in his fifties has been charged and placed in pretrial detention for the murder of his ex-partner in Vaucluse. The man, a former legionnaire according to Le Figaro, is suspected of having killed the victim with extreme violence on Saturday. He was already known to the judicial authorities for acts of violence against the same woman, who was under protective measures. The suspect was under judicial supervision following previous violent acts.
A history of domestic violence
According to La Provence, the man was on the list of National Rally candidate Franck Marest during the last municipal elections. Marest was defeated by the incumbent mayor. This political affiliation comes in a context where the suspect had already been reported for violent behavior towards his former partner.
This latest case of femicide once again highlights the limitations of the systems in place to protect victims of domestic violence. Despite the legal measures in place and the supervision imposed on the man in his fifties, the tragedy could not be prevented. The public prosecutor's office has decided to place the man in pretrial detention pending his trial.
