A man and a woman were found dead Thursday morning in their home in Chartrettes, Seine-et-Marne. The couple, aged 55 and 59, are believed to have succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning, according to initial information released by the Melun prosecutor's office.
Discovered by a relative living on the same property, the bodies were found in a house where emergency responders immediately noted an abnormally high level of carbon monoxide in the air. Firefighters observed strong emissions coming from the boiler room, with high concentrations of carbon monoxide.
A faulty installation was the cause
Initial findings indicate that the heating system had been malfunctioning for several weeks. A technician had recently intervened, but the system appears to have malfunctioned again, causing toxic gas to accumulate inside the apartment.
The tragedy also affected the couple's business, as they ran a dog boarding kennel on the premises. Four dogs inside the house died, while the animals housed outside were unharmed. An investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances of the poisoning.
