Haute-Vienne was confronted on Wednesday with one of the largest vegetation fires in its recent history. Starting in the commune of Magnac-Laval, in the north of the department, the blaze swept through vast areas of fields and undergrowth, also destroying two farm buildings.
Faced with the rapid spread of the flames, fueled by weather conditions particularly conducive to wildfires, a major firefighting operation was deployed. Hundreds of firefighters, supported by ground and air resources, were mobilized to protect homes and limit the spread of the blaze.
According to eyewitness accounts, many farmers also participated in the firefighting efforts, using their tractors to create firebreaks and try to contain the flames. Despite these efforts, several agricultural plots and wooded areas were severely damaged.
A mobilization that continues
Emergency services remain fully engaged this Thursday to deal with the numerous hotspots and prevent any flare-ups, as the heatwave and drought continue to increase the risk of fire across much of the territory.
Since the beginning of July, several thousand hectares have already gone up in smoke, particularly in the Pyrénées-Orientales, where a major fire continues to require significant emergency resources. Authorities are once again urging the public to remain extremely vigilant in order to limit the risk of new fires breaking out.
