A widespread power outage struck southwest Berlin on Saturday morning , leaving tens of thousands of homes and numerous businesses without electricity. The incident occurred after a fire damaged several cables installed on a bridge in the immediate vicinity of a power plant in the German capital.
According to the network operator, nearly 45,000 households and more than 2,000 businesses were affected. The fire, reported shortly before 7 a.m., was quickly brought under control by firefighters, but the damage to infrastructure resulted in a prolonged power outage.
An investigation has been opened for a deliberate act.
German police are focusing on arson as the cause of the fire and have deployed a significant number of officers in the Lichterfelde district , where the incident occurred. Investigators are working to determine the exact circumstances of the fire and whether any third parties were involved.
