Italian authorities announced Tuesday the seizure of 770 kg of "extra pure" cocaine in the port of Vado Ligure, Liguria. According to the financial police and customs services, the drugs were concealed in dozens of pallets of bananas transported in a refrigerated container from one of Ecuador's main ports. The value of this shipment is estimated at approximately €250 million on the street.
This operation represents one of the largest cocaine seizures in recent years at this strategic port in northwestern Italy. Investigators are continuing their inquiries to identify the criminal organizations involved in transporting the drugs and their distribution network in Europe.
Another large-scale seizure in just a few weeks
This discovery comes less than three weeks after a previous operation in the same port of Vado Ligure. Law enforcement intercepted 340 kg of cocaine there, with an estimated street value of €120 million. The repetition of these seizures confirms the port's status as a key entry point for international drug trafficking networks.
Italian authorities reiterate that fruit shipments from South America are among the most frequently used concealment methods employed by criminal organizations to smuggle cocaine into the European market. Controls have been stepped up at the country's main ports to detect these illicit shipments.
