The US president did not specify the nature of the "deal" he was hoping for, but he urged Cuban authorities to negotiate quickly, suggesting that the island's room for maneuver was shrinking. Washington also continued to seize oil shipments linked to Venezuela, thus cutting off a vital supply for the Cuban economy.
The fall of Nicolás Maduro also had human and political repercussions for Cuba. The Cuban government indicated that several dozen members of its security forces were killed during the US operation in Caracas, where they were present under bilateral cooperation agreements.
For years, the Cuban economy has been weakened by the US embargo, shortages of energy and basic necessities, and repeated power outages. The loss of Venezuelan support, long vital, exacerbates these difficulties and fuels fears of social unrest on the island.
