Baccalaureate: the minister deems the exams in the middle of the afternoon unsuitable

Faced with the increasing frequency of intense heat waves at the end of the school year, the Minister of National Education wants to review the organization of exams. Speaking on France Inter radio on Sunday, Édouard Geffray stated that it was no longer appropriate to hold exams during the hottest hours of the day, given that temperatures are now regularly reaching exceptional levels as early as June.

The minister indicated his intention to prioritize exams held exclusively in the morning in the future. According to him, conditions are generally more bearable between the start of the day and midday, particularly when the rooms have been ventilated before the candidates arrive. This proposal comes as the written baccalaureate exams are set to begin in the coming days amidst particularly challenging weather conditions.

The school system confronted with the effects of global warming

France is indeed bracing for another heatwave that could last for more than a week. Forecasters are predicting temperatures well above seasonal averages, with peaks exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some regions and approaching 39 degrees Celsius in the Paris area. Specific weather warnings could be issued if this situation materializes.

However, Édouard Geffray is not advocating for moving exams to another time of year. The challenge lies rather in adapting their administration to the new climatic realities. This development is part of a broader debate on adapting schools to heat waves, which have become more frequent and earlier due to climate change.
