At least 12 people were killed and nine others wounded Tuesday night in a shooting in a slum in eastern Johannesburg, South Africa. The information was confirmed Wednesday by South African police, who have opened an investigation.
According to authorities, gunmen opened fire in the Cleveland shantytown, also known as the Jumpers area. The exact circumstances of the attack have not yet been established, but law enforcement officials are suggesting it was an operation carried out by multiple assailants.
In a statement, police said they had launched a massive manhunt for more than ten suspects involved in the attack. Authorities have not yet specified the shooters' possible motives.
The injured were transported to nearby medical facilities, while the area was secured by security forces. No precise information on the condition of the survivors has yet been released.
Mass shootings remain a recurring problem in South Africa, where the circulation of illegal firearms regularly contributes to episodes of deadly violence, particularly in disadvantaged urban areas.
Local authorities have promised to strengthen security operations in the area, while the investigation continues to identify those responsible and determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
