World Cup - Colombia stifles Ghana and snatches the last ticket for the round of 16

Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 last night in Kansas City, completing their group for the Round of 16 of the World Cup. A goal from Jhon Arias in the 14th minute was enough for a solid and dominant Cafeteros side who were never truly threatened. Colombia will face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver.

Arias strikes, Colombia in control

In the 14th minute, Jhon Arias opened the scoring after a cross from Luis Suárez, who had come on early for Jhon Córdoba, injured at the start of the match. Arias found himself unmarked at the far post and calmly finished. 1-0. The score remained unchanged. This goal quickly put Colombia in an ideal position to control the game. Néstor Lorenzo's men dominated possession, forcing Ghana to play deep and preventing the Black Stars from applying any pressure. A notable fact: Ghana failed to register a single shot on target. Colombia completely neutralized their opponents.

A tense evening, a tight match

The Kansas City heat took its toll on the game. The match was played in grueling conditions, with temperatures around 29 to 30 degrees Celsius and high humidity. Players quickly felt the strain. Both teams lost a player very early on: Jhon Córdoba for Colombia and Marvin Senaya for Ghana.

A deserved qualification

Colombia finished this round of 32 match with a commanding performance. This victory also confirms the strength of Colombia's run in this World Cup. After finishing top of their group, ahead of Portugal, Uzbekistan, and DR Congo, Néstor Lorenzo's team continues their unbeaten tournament.

Switzerland is waiting in Vancouver

With this victory, Colombia becomes the last team to qualify for the round of 16. They will face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver, with a place in the quarterfinals at stake.
