The American president dismissed the concerns of sailors’ families aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, whose record deployment of 250 days at sea is causing tensions. The Trump administration has also taken the Supreme Court to authorize the construction of a ballroom at the White House.
Donald Trump stated that the families of sailors deployed on the USS Abraham Lincoln are not worried about the ship’s extended deployment, calling its 250 days at sea « far from sufficient. » However, relatives of crew members had publicly expressed their concerns about this record deployment, as the aircraft carrier is engaged in the American mission regarding Iran.
The president did confirm, however, that the USS George Washington will relieve the Abraham Lincoln in this theater of operations. This announcement comes as the exceptional length of the deployment had fueled growing controversy, with sailors’ families disputing the optimistic version defended by the White House.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court to obtain authorization to continue the construction of a ballroom integrated into the east wing of the White House. In its brief, it describes the judicial injunction blocking this project as « extraordinary and illegal, » citing national security imperatives to justify the plan.
An appeals court had previously blocked the construction of the above-ground parts, while allowing underground work related to security infrastructure to continue. It is precisely this distinction that the administration seeks to overturn before the country’s highest court.
