Paris Saint-Germain keeps piling up trophies. Winner against Aston Villa (2-1) on Wednesday in Salzburg, the Parisian club wins the UEFA Super Cup for the second consecutive year and perfectly kicks off its 2026-2027 season. After the match, Marquinhos immediately set the course: Paris wants to extend this streak and keep winning.
Paris strikes again right from the start
As title holders, PSG retains the UEFA Super Cup after a contested match against the Europa League winner. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring in the 20th minute, before Brian Madjo equalized just before halftime. At 17 years old, the Aston Villa forward becomes the youngest scorer in the competition’s history. Paris regained the lead after the hour mark thanks to Désiré Doué. Launched behind the English defense, the French international found the net. The goal, initially ruled offside, was ultimately awarded after VAR intervention. PSG then maintained its lead until the final whistle and won 2-1.
Marquinhos: “We want to stay in football history”
At the final whistle, Marquinhos did not hide his satisfaction. The Parisian captain notably emphasized his team’s ability to win a new trophy despite a shortened summer preparation for several players. For the Brazilian defender, this new success mainly confirms the group’s intact ambition. PSG does not intend to be content with the titles already won. “We want to stay in football history”, Marquinhos states, who believes the only way to achieve this is to keep winning every time a trophy is at stake.
As a reminder, Paris is already coming off two exceptional European seasons. Crowned Champions League winners in 2025 and again in 2026, PSG became in spring only the second club to retain the Champions League since the current format was introduced, after Real Madrid.
PSG joins AC Milan and Real Madrid
With this new UEFA Super Cup victory, Paris adds another historic achievement to its record. The club becomes only the third team to win the competition two consecutive years, after AC Milan in 1989 and 1990 and Real Madrid in 2016 and 2017. Ajax had also won the 1972 and 1973 editions, but the first was still an unofficial event.
The story is all the more spectacular as PSG had never won this competition before 2025. Defeated by Juventus in its first participation in 1996, Paris won its first trophy in 2025 against Tottenham, after coming back from a two-goal deficit and winning on penalties. One year later, Parisians thus retain their crown against Aston Villa.
A 2026-2027 season already underway
For Luis Enrique and his players, this new trophy arrives at the very first official meeting of the season. Despite shortened holidays for several internationals after the World Cup and limited preparation, Paris picks up exactly where it left off: winning. And Marquinhos especially does not want to see his team slow down. After two Champions League titles and now two consecutive UEFA Super Cups, the Parisian captain sets a simple line for what’s next: every chance to win a new title must be played to the fullest. PSG thus starts its 2026-2027 season with a new European trophy and a clearly stated ambition: to keep winning to extend an already historic period for the club.
