Thirty-five years after Martin Scorsese's cult film, Apple TV+ offers its own reinterpretation of Cape Fear in ten episodes, starring Javier Bardem as the formidable Max Cady, alongside Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson.
An ex-convict who had plenty of time to prepare his revenge
The series follows Max Cady, a former convict convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, who is released from prison determined to take revenge on the lawyers he holds responsible for his incarceration seventeen years earlier, Tom and Anna Bowden. Rather than imitating previous interpretations of the character, portrayed by Robert Mitchum in 1962 and then by Robert De Niro in 1991, Javier Bardem explained that he sought to understand what truly motivated Cady, a man who has lost everything and now has unlimited time to achieve his goals.
The actor, already an Oscar winner for his role in No Country for Old Men, initially hesitated to reprise this iconic role, before learning that Martin Scorsese was returning as an executive producer alongside Steven Spielberg, who also produced the 1991 film.
A tension that is distilled rather than imposed by force
Unlike the 1991 version, where Max used brute force to terrorize the lawyer's family, Javier Bardem opted for a more insidious approach, gradually getting closer to his targets while maintaining a distance. The cast also includes CCH Pounder as Anna's superior, as well as the Bowden children, played by Lily Collias and Joe Anders.
Created by Nick Antosca, showrunner of the series, with Morten Tyldum directing the pilot, this adaptation is based both on the original novel by John D. MacDonald, The Executioners, published in 1957, and on the two previous film adaptations of the story.
