Chosen to play Severus Snape in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series, Paapa Essiedu is already facing violence that goes far beyond the realm of fiction. In an interview with the Sunday Times, the 35-year-old British actor recounts receiving death threats and numerous racist messages since his casting was announced in April 2025.
An outpouring of hatred has erupted since the announcement of his casting.
Paapa Essiedu told the Sunday Times that he had seen a flood of chilling messages on social media. Some users reportedly wrote to him, "Quit the role or I'll kill you," while others promised to come to his home and murder him. The actor explained that, although he thought it unlikely such an act would occur, no one should have to endure this simply for doing their job. He added that this hostility continues to affect him emotionally, even when he tries to distance himself from it.
These attacks are clearly aimed at his choice to take on a character made iconic in cinema by Alan Rickman. The fact that a Black actor was cast in the role triggered a wave of racist reactions from some fans, revealing once again the brutality that some online communities can display when their representations are challenged.
A determination undiminished despite the attacks
Far from giving up, Paapa Essiedu told the Sunday Times that this hatred only strengthens his resolve to take on the role. He explained that he thinks of the child he once was, when he too imagined himself at Hogwarts, and said that the idea of allowing other children to see themselves in this world means a great deal to him. It is this perspective, in his words, that helps him resist the intimidation.
The actor also clarified that he does not intend, at this stage, to pursue legal action against those responsible for these threats. Speaking to the Sunday Times, he believes that sending a teenager to prison for a few weeks would not truly bring him relief. Expected in 2027, the Harry Potter series is already shaping up to be one of the most closely watched television projects of the coming years. For Paapa Essiedu, it begins primarily as a battle that should never have existed.
