Fans of the cult 2000s series will be able to dive back into the world of Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus will reprise the character that made her famous in a special episode airing on Disney+ on March 24, to celebrate the show's 20th anniversary.
The announcement was made by Disney in a press release presenting this anniversary program. The episode will look back at the creation of the series and its impact on audiences, two decades after its initial broadcast on the Disney Channel.
A special episode filmed for the series' anniversary
This program will take the form of a special focused on Miley Cyrus. According to Disney, it will include an in-depth interview with the singer and actress conducted by American host Alex Cooper, as well as never-before-seen archival footage and recreations of iconic sets from the series.
Viewers will notably be able to revisit the Stewart family living room and Hannah Montana's famous secret dressing room, central elements of the fiction.
A series that has become a global phenomenon
Airing between 2006 and 2011, Hannah Montana told the story of Miley Stewart, a teenager who hid a double identity: student by day and pop star by night. This simple concept quickly transformed the series into a cultural phenomenon.
The show has been nominated for several Emmy Awards and has spawned a highly lucrative music franchise. Albums from the series have achieved numerous gold and platinum records worldwide, while the brand has expanded into film and touring.
"A way to thank the fans"
In the press release announcing this special episode, Miley Cyrus speaks of the importance the series has had in her life. "Hannah Montana will always be a part of me. What started as a simple TV series became a collective experience that shaped my life and the lives of so many fans," she says.
The artist also explains that this anniversary is for her "a way to celebrate and thank the fans" who have followed her since her beginnings.
Proof that public interest has not waned, the Hannah Montana catalogue on Disney+ has already surpassed half a billion hours of viewing worldwide, according to data released by the platform.
