Tour de France 2025 – Tim Wellens wins stage 15 after a masterful solo raid

This Sunday, the 15th stage of the Tour de France between Muret and Carcassonne (169,3 kilometers) was marked by a disjointed race, a high pace from the opening kilometers, and an exceptional performance by Belgian Tim Wellens. The UAE Team Emirates rider won solo after an individual effort of nearly 44 kilometers.

A stage promised to adventurers

This stage was expected to be a stage for attackers. With its hilly terrain and demanding climbs, it presented no major challenges for the general classification leaders, but offered a great opportunity for those capable of starting from a distance. From the start in Muret, attacks multiplied, and the nervousness of the peloton resulted in a massive crash around kilometer 15. Several favorites and outsiders were involved, including Florian Lipowitz, the white jersey holder for Red Bull–Bora Hansgrohe, Lenny Martinez (Bahrain Victorious), and Julian Alaphilippe (Tudor Pro Cycling), in a crash caused by a roundabout and a tricky cobbled section.

The day's breakaway and the decisive offensive

After numerous unsuccessful attempts, an eight-rider breakaway formed shortly after the halfway point. Tim Wellens, who had been quiet so far in this Tour, managed his efforts in this leading group before launching a sharp attack with 43 kilometers to go. Sitting in the saddle, in rhythm and with a big gear, he immediately opened up a gap, taking advantage of the hesitations behind him. None of his former breakaway companions were able to match his pace.

A first Tour victory for Wellens

Tim Wellens maintained a comfortable lead over his pursuers to cross the finish line solo in Carcassonne. At 34, he thus claimed his first ever Tour de France victory, having already won the Giro and Vuelta a España. He also became the 113th rider in history to win all three Grand Tours. He finished ahead of Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike), who also rode a strong race, and Julian Alaphilippe, who came back into the fray after his crash.

Confusion on arrival

Julian Alaphilippe, believing he had crossed the line as the winner, briefly celebrated his performance before realizing he had finished third. This confusion was indicative of a trying day, where riders often lost their bearings after the numerous breaks caused by crashes and constant restarts. Alaphilippe's post-race statement was straightforward: "I was convinced we were coming back to Wellens. I no longer had the gaps in mind, I gave everything I had in the final."

Pogacar remains calm in yellow

Despite the tumult of the day, Tadej pogacar easily retained his yellow jersey. UAE Team Emirates, already dominant in this 2025 edition, thus secured another stage victory, this time thanks to one of its most loyal lieutenants. Mauro Gianetti, the team's sporting director, praised the performance: "Tim read the race perfectly. He knew how to choose the right moment to start, and then he knew how to manage it. He fully deserved it."

Tomorrow, the riders will rest, before the finish at Mont Ventoux on Tuesday...
