British cyclist Chris Froome, four-time Tour de France winner, suffered a serious crash during a training session near Saint-Raphaël, in the Var department. He was rushed by helicopter to Toulon hospital, where he suffered a pneumothorax, five broken ribs, and a fractured lumbar vertebra. His condition is considered serious, and he is scheduled to undergo surgery in the coming hours. Fortunately, no head injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

A career already marked by injuries

The crash was reminiscent of the 2019 crash at the Critérium du Dauphiné, where Froome suffered multiple fractures, including his femur, elbow, and hip. Since then, the British champion has struggled to regain his former form, having not won a major race since the 2018 Giro. Now a member of the Israël-Premier Tech team, he was already considering the end of his career, with his contract expiring this year.

A 2025 season ended prematurely

Due to the severity of his injuries, Froome has been forced to end his 2025 season. The question of his retirement is now a pressing one. In recent interviews, he has expressed his desire to create a cycling academy in Africa, hinting at new projects outside of competition.

The news of the crash prompted an outpouring of support from his teammates, former rivals, and fans around the world. The cycling community remains committed to a speedy recovery for Froome, even though a return to competition seems unlikely given the severity of his injuries.
