Roland-Garros: At 17, Moïse Kouamé defeats Marin Cilic and achieves a huge upset

Moïse Kouamé made a big splash right from his opening match at Roland-Garros. A wildcard entrant, the 17-year-old Frenchman eliminated Marin Cilic in the first round on Tuesday on Court Simonne-Mathieu. The score was decisive: 7-6(4), 6-2, 6-1, in 2 hours and 38 minutes. This victory marks Kouamé's first appearance in the main draw of Roland-Garros. Ranked 318th in the world before the tournament, the young Frenchman dominated a much more experienced opponent, a 37-year-old former Grand Slam champion.

A decisive first set, then a demonstration

The match began with a hard-fought first set. Kouamé won the opening set in a tiebreak, 7-4, after 74 minutes of play. Once he had secured the first set, the Frenchman clearly took control, conceding only three games to Cilic in the following two sets. Boosted by the crowd at Simonne-Mathieu, Kouamé displayed remarkable composure despite the pressure. The tournament organizers noted that he remained calm after the close first set before extending his lead over his opponent.

A historic feat at Roland-Garros

The achievement goes beyond a simple first-round victory. According to Roland-Garros, Moïse Kouamé has become the youngest player in the Open Era to defeat a Grand Slam champion at the Parisian tournament. He is also the youngest male player to reach the second round in Paris since 1991. This victory makes him the youngest player in the Open Era to beat a Grand Slam champion at Roland-Garros, surpassing a record previously held by Michael Chang.
