Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion, has been suspended for four years for refusing to submit to a doping test. The decision was handed down by an independent tribunal and bars the Czech player from competing until [date missing]. 21th June 2030At 26, the former world number 6 saw her career abruptly halted. This suspension is solely for her refusal to provide a sample during an out-of-competition test.
The inspection dates back to December 3, 2025
The events took place on December 3, 2025, at the player's home. An anti-doping control officer arrived at Marketa Vondrousova's residence for a surprise test, outside of an official competition. The Czech player refused to provide a sample. This refusal was subsequently reviewed by an independent tribunal, which determined that there was insufficient justification to dismiss the anti-doping rule violation.
Under anti-doping regulations, this type of refusal is treated extremely severely. A player cannot avoid a heavy penalty simply by refusing to submit to the test.
A shaky defense
In her defense, Marketa Vondrousova explained that her psychological state had influenced her reaction. The independent tribunal ruled that they did not constitute sufficient justification for refusing the inspection.
A ban on playing, coaching, and even attending events
The sanction is not limited to tournaments. During her suspension, Marketa Vondrousova will not be able to participate in events organized or recognized by the major tennis governing bodies. She is barred from competition, but also from activities related to the official circuits: it is impossible to play, coach or attend events sanctioned by the ITF, the WTA, the ATP, Grand Slam tournaments or national federations.
A terrible blow to an already fragile career
This decision comes at a time when the Czech player was already going through a difficult period. After her historic Wimbledon title in 2023, Marketa Vondrousova suffered several injuries and a drop in the rankings. With her suspension running until June 2030, she will be 30 years old at the theoretical time of her return. In top-level tennis, such a long absence represents a significant handicap.
An appeal is still possible
Marketa Vondrousova can still appeal the sanction to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, there is little chance that this appeal will succeed. She will therefore not be able to return to the circuit before June 21, 2030. If she does return…
