Stephen Colbert bids farewell to the "Late Show" amid tensions with Donald Trump

American talk show host Stephen Colbert presented the final episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS Thursday, ending his eleven-year tenure at the helm of the iconic late-night program. Having succeeded David Letterman in 2015, the comedian concluded his run with several sketches, a series of high-profile guests, and a performance by Paul McCartney singing "Hello, Goodbye."

Very critical of Donald Trump For years, Stephen Colbert had chosen to spare the American president during this final broadcast. The announcement of the program's cancellation dates back to last summer, shortly after the host publicly criticized an agreement reached between CBS's parent company, Paramount Global, and Donald Trump in a dispute over a Kamala Harris interview.

This disappearance fuels the debate about political pressure.

CBS claims the show's cancellation is solely motivated by financial reasons, despite its strong ratings. However, many media figures see it as another episode in the ongoing conflict between Donald Trump and the major American media outlets, which he regularly accuses of political bias.

The US president had launched numerous attacks against Stephen Colbert in recent months, calling the host a "pathetic wreck" and publicly celebrating the cancellation of his show on his social media platform, Truth Social. Meanwhile, the network has undertaken a major editorial overhaul under the leadership of conservative journalist Bari Weiss, recently appointed head of CBS News.

Towards a new TV project for the presenter

During the final weeks of the program, several figures opposed to Donald Trump came to support Stephen Colbert, including Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, and Tom Hanks.

Stephen Colbert has hinted that he might return soon with a new television project. A passionate fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's universe, the presenter also announced he is working with Peter Jackson on a future film set in The Lord of the Rings universe.
