Canal+ is working on reviving a new French adaptation of “Saturday Night Live”, almost ten years after the M6 version starring Gad Elmaleh. According to exclusive information from Entrevue, the encrypted channel is developing this project with a view to an event broadcast from September 2026 and has approached comedian and Radio Nova host Akim Omiri to present it, with the ambition of modernizing this cult format mixing live sketches, satire and musical performances.
A cult format that is struggling to gain traction in France
The previous French version, launched in 2017, failed to establish itself despite respectable ratings. Critics pointed to weak writing and a lack of overall coherence, preventing the program from becoming a long-term success. The concept, though iconic in the United States, has yet to find its footing in France.
As a reminder, “Saturday Night Live” is a live entertainment show that blends humor and satire. Each episode opens with a monologue, followed by live or pre-recorded sketches inspired by current events, and then a musical performance. The show features a recurring cast of comedians and an often irreverent tone, a hallmark of the program since its inception.
Akim Omiri is in the spotlight to embody the renewal
For this new version, the production, entrusted to Éric Hannezo (Black Dynamite), explores several profiles from the current comedy scene. According to our sources, Akim Omiri has been approached to host the show. The comedian, who notably hosts “La riposte” on Radio Nova, embodies a generation that is media-savvy, politically engaged, and very active on social media.
