Eurovision audience fiasco: more than a million viewers lost in one year

While Eurovision 2026 may have placed France 2 at the top of the ratings on Saturday night, the overall result is far from triumphant. Broadcast from Vienna, Austria, the 70th edition of the contest attracted 3,99 million viewers, representing a 33,3% audience share.

A score sufficient to dominate the evening, but significantly lower than last year's. In 2025, 5,28 million people watched the contest. In one year, Eurovision has therefore lost nearly 1,3 million viewers, a massive decline for one of the major television events of the spring.

The disappointment also stemmed from the rankings. French contestant Monroe finished in 11th place, far from the podium. Despite the anticipation surrounding her performance, France failed to make its mark in an edition won by Bulgaria. This mediocre result, coupled with declining viewership, reinforces the impression of a disappointing evening for the French contestants.

A rerun from France 3 not so far behind

Another worrying sign: France 3 wasn't far behind with a simple rerun of a police drama. This is hardly flattering for Eurovision, which is broadcast live and supposed to be a major television event. Between the loss of over a million viewers, Monroe's 11th place finish, and ultimately close competition, the 2026 edition leaves a very mixed impression. France 2 wins the evening, but Eurovision itself emerges weakened. This isn't really surprising. Between ridiculous performances, votes lacking any credibility, and a contest that has become more of a political platform than a genuine musical event, the French public has distanced itself…
