Canal+ will close its physical stores: the end of a 42-year-old model

Canal+ will end its authorized physical distribution network in France on September 1, 2026. This decision brings to a close a system launched with the channel in 1984, at a time when subscriptions were only available through physical points of sale. For over four decades, these authorized resellers sold Canal+ subscriptions, provided equipment to customers, assisted with equipment installation, and served as local intermediaries for subscribers.

Up to 4,000 points of sale at its peak

At its peak, the Canal+ network boasted around 4,000 distribution points. This physical presence was long a central element of the channel's business model, particularly with the development of satellite and Canalsat. These points of sale were easily recognizable by their Canal+ signage. They allowed customers to subscribe, pick up a decoder, have certain technical issues resolved, or receive direct support, especially for home installations.

The decision does not mean that all the affected shops will close. Many of these retailers are independent businesses: antenna installers, electricians, general installers, or specialized shops that offered Canal+ as a complementary service. However, starting September 1, 2026, these businesses will lose the authorization allowing them to sell Canal+ and manage certain subscription-related services. They will be able to continue their other activities, but will no longer represent Canal+ in this commercial context.

Digital technology has replaced the counter

Canal+ justifies this decision by citing market trends and evolving user habits. Subscriptions are now largely purchased online, connected TVs have reduced the need for in-store visits, and streaming services have profoundly transformed content access. The group believes that its physical network has become too expensive and complex to maintain, while its role has become marginal in the subscriber experience.

What changes for subscribers

Subscribers who previously went through a physical retailer will now have to contact Canal+ directly for equipment-related requests, decoder replacements, or technical support. Customer relations are therefore shifting more towards the group's direct channels: subscriber area, app, online support, and customer service. Canal+ is not eliminating support altogether, but is removing the role of authorized intermediaries from independent retailers.

A new chapter begins for French pay television

This decision marks the end of a model that accompanied the birth and rise of pay television in France. For years, a Canal+ subscription was tied to a physical location, a local retailer, a decoder delivered in person, and a physical installation at the subscriber's home. From September 2026, Canal+ will close this chapter. The group is continuing its transformation towards a model centered on direct subscriptions, connected services, and digital distribution. The Canal+ logo will gradually disappear from authorized retailers' storefronts, a symbol of a time when subscribing to a pay channel still began at a store counter.
