Charlie Dalin is dead: the Vendée Globe winner passed away at 42.

The sailing world is in mourning. Charlie Dalin, winner of the 2024-2025 Vendée Globe, died overnight Wednesday to Thursday in Quimper, at the age of 42. The news was announced by his family in a statement sent to AFP.

"It is with deep sadness that my family and I announce the passing of my husband, Charlie Dalin, following a long illness," said his wife, Perrine Le Pape. The sailor had been battling gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), a rare form of cancer, for more than two years.

A major figure in offshore racing, Charlie Dalin made sailing history by winning the 2024-2025 Vendée Globe. A naval engineer by training, he established himself as one of the most talented skippers of his generation, admired for his rigor, humility and exceptional performances on the oceans.

His family indicated that tributes would be paid to him in the coming days and asked for respect for his privacy during this particularly painful time.
