An automatic summary of unread conversations will soon be tested on WhatsApp.

Meta's messaging app is testing a new feature designed to simplify reading conversations: an AI-powered system for summarizing unread messages. Spotted in a beta version on Android, this option would allow users to quickly get a summary of recent exchanges without having to read through entire conversations.

The system relies on local processing technology designed to guarantee data confidentiality. According to Meta, neither the content of the messages nor the generated summaries are accessible to the company's servers. Independent audits have been conducted to validate the system's security, ensuring compliance with international data protection standards.

An optional privacy-focused approach

In practice, this feature would appear in a filter dedicated to unread conversations. Users could then manually enable the generation of a summary, which would analyze recent messages using encryption before providing a synthesis. This option would remain entirely optional and disabled by default.

Still in the testing phase, this innovation needs to be refined to ensure the relevance of the summaries, especially when multiple conversations are involved. No deployment date or geographic area has been announced yet, but this development illustrates WhatsApp's commitment to integrating more artificial intelligence tools while prioritizing privacy protection.
