The French Navy recently tested American equipment as part of its underwater capabilities, conducting trials from a new-generation nuclear attack submarine. This initiative is part of a broader discussion on the evolution of reconnaissance capabilities in the naval environment.
The trials were conducted in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Toulon, using an unmanned underwater drone provided by the United States. The objective was to verify technical compatibility with French vessels, particularly those of the Suffren class, which now have an external module enabling the carriage and deployment of this type of equipment.
A strategic capability still being explored
According to the general staff, the main advantage lies in the ability to deploy an autonomous system ahead of a mission to collect data without directly exposing the submarine. This approach would broaden the operational scope while limiting risks in sensitive areas.
While no acquisition decision has been made at this stage, these trials illustrate the strengthening of cooperation with the US Navy and the growing interest in these technologies. They also pave the way for future developments, whether through foreign purchases or the development of domestic solutions.
