Working from home: what expenses can be deducted from taxable income?

The rise of remote work has allowed some employees to deduct professional expenses from their tax returns. However, these expenses must be directly related to their work and must not have been reimbursed by their employer to be eligible.

Two options are possible: keep the automatic 10% allowance applied by the tax authorities or choose to deduct actual expenses. This second option may be more advantageous if the expenses incurred exceed this threshold, but it requires keeping all supporting documents.

What expenses can be taken into account?

Eligible expenses include computer equipment, office furniture, internet subscriptions, and supplies. A portion of housing costs can also be included, such as rent or energy bills, provided that a pro-rata calculation is based on the space and time actually spent working.

Employees can also apply a daily allowance for teleworking, within certain limits set by the government. However, any compensation paid by the employer reduces the deductible amount, unless it remains less than the actual and duly justified expenses incurred.
