While drug trafficking is increasingly worrying the authorities, a survey by the CSA institute for CNews, Europe 1 and the JDD shows that 70% of French people consider it necessary to intervene by the army to combat drug trafficking in the difficult neighborhoods.
Last May, the JDD was able to consult a note from the Anti-Narcotics Office revealing the extent of trafficking in France. For the month of April 2024 alone, the figures are alarming: 511 arrests, nearly 2 tonnes of cocaine and cannabis seized, 109 firearms confiscated, 85 vehicles immobilized, and 1,5 million euros in criminal assets identified.
According to the poll, 29% of French people are opposed to the intervention of the army and 1% have no opinion. Compared to the April 2023 poll, where 66% were in favor of this measure, support has increased significantly.
The study shows differences by gender: 72% of women support the army's intervention compared to 68% of men. Opponents are 31% among men and 27% among women.
Young people aged 18-24 are the most favorable to this measure, with 77% support. The 25-34 and 35-49 age groups are in favor at 68%, and those over 50 at 71%. Only 2% of 18-24 year olds have no opinion.
Opinions also vary according to socio-professional categories. The CSP+ are 64% in support of the army intervention against 35% of opponents, while the CSP- are 76% in favor against 24% opposed. 71% of inactive people approve of this measure, with 1% undecided.
Political supporters show divergent opinions. Environmental supporters are mainly against (64%), while 56% of Socialist Party supporters support the idea. Supporters of La France insoumise are divided with 45% for and 55% against.
In the presidential bloc, 70% of supporters support the intervention of the army, with no undecided, compared to 30% of opponents. Republican supporters are 80% in favor and 17% against, with 3% undecided. The strongest support comes from the National Rally, where 89% of supporters are in favor of this measure compared to 11% of opponents.
