Holiday returns: a busy weekend expected on French roads

Heavy traffic is expected from Friday, August 21st to Monday, August 24th across much of the French road network. As the school holidays draw to a close, many motorists will be leaving coastal regions to return to major cities. The main difficulties will therefore be on the return journeys, although several routes will also be congested leaving the major cities.

On Friday, the western half of the country will be under an orange traffic alert for departures, with heavy traffic expected from late morning to early evening. Motorists are advised to avoid the A25, A22, A10, and A62 motorways, particularly during the afternoon. For return journeys, traffic will be especially congested in the south, from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean, as well as in the Île-de-France region until the evening.

Saturday, the most difficult day of the weekend

Saturday, August 22nd, will see the most significant disruptions. Traffic will be heavy in western France, northern France, and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region for those heading out of town, while the entire western region of France will be classified as a red zone for those returning. Slowdowns are expected on the A16, A7, A75, and A40 motorways, as well as around Paris, starting late morning.

On Sunday, departures should be relatively smooth, but the entire country will be classified as orange for return journeys. The A10, A9, A7, A75, A71, and A61 motorways are expected to be particularly busy, as is the A13 approaching the Île-de-France region. On Monday, the last traffic problems will be concentrated in the Southwest and around Paris, especially on the A10, A63, and A62 motorways.
