Rails cleaned, overhead lines inspected: SNCF is preparing for the return of trains south of Bordeaux

After several days of disruption caused by the fire in the Gironde region, SNCF Réseau has begun inspecting the railway infrastructure south of Bordeaux. Reconnaissance trains are now running on the tracks to assess the damage before a possible gradual resumption of service. The operations cover approximately 160 kilometers of track: about 60 kilometers between Bordeaux and Arcachon and nearly 100 kilometers towards Morcenx, north of Dax. Service was suspended on Sunday when the flames reached Marcheprime and spread to the immediate vicinity of the tracks. The Gironde prefecture authorized the restoration of power to the electrical installations on Thursday morning. This step allows technical teams to inspect the tracks, the overhead power lines supplying the trains, the signaling systems, and the telecommunications equipment.

A track-cleaning train to remove ash from the tracks

If the amount of residue warrants it, a track-cleaning train can be sent to the affected sections. This vehicle projects high-pressure liquid to remove the ash deposited on the rails. This residue can impair train traction, mask damage, or affect the operation of railway infrastructure. Up to one hundred staff members may be mobilized to restore the network. SNCF Réseau is considering reopening by line or section, depending on the findings of the assessments. Therefore, train service will not necessarily resume simultaneously to Arcachon, Morcenx, Dax, and destinations further south. TGV trains operating south of Bordeaux, with the exception of those bound for Toulouse, as well as regional trains to Arcachon and Morcenx, remain canceled until Sunday, August 2nd. This disruption occurs during one of the busiest weekends of the summer. SNCF must therefore balance the pressure of the holiday travel rush with a safety requirement that prohibits any hasty reopening.
