Depardieu trial: nearly 200 lawyers denounce an “unacceptable” sexist blunder by the defense

The trial of Gérard Depardieu, on trial for sexual assault, continues to cause a stir. Nearly 200 lawyers signed an op-ed published Friday, March 28, in Le Monde, denouncing the "blatant sexism" of Jérémie Assous, the actor's counsel, during the hearing at the Paris Criminal Court. They call on the justice system to "no longer allow impunity in the courtroom."

Comments deemed sexist and violent

During his closing arguments, Mr. Assous allegedly made insulting remarks about the plaintiffs, Amélie and Sarah, calling them "liars" and "hysterical," while personally attacking the lawyers for the civil parties. The article refers to a "masculinist strategy," emphasizing that the defense went well beyond the usual rights of criminal procedure, creating a climate of "violence" in the hearing.

Silence from the justice system and reaction from the bar

The signatories point to "the absolute silence of the court" and "the inaction of the bar association." The Paris Bar, contacted by AFP, confirmed that no formal referral to the president of the bar had yet been filed, while reiterating that courtroom rules govern the conduct of lawyers. It has not ruled out opening an investigation if any breaches of professional ethics are found. The verdict in the Depardieu trial is expected on May 13.
