First major summer traffic surge: very heavy traffic expected from Friday

The first weekend of the summer holidays is expected to be particularly busy on French roads. Between 5 and 8 million motorists are anticipated on the road network, according to Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot. Bison Futé (the French traffic information service) has classified Friday and Saturday as red days for departures, due to heavy traffic heading towards major French tourist destinations and the arrival of holidaymakers from neighboring countries.

On Friday, major traffic delays are expected on routes leading to the northeast quarter of France, the Atlantic coast, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and the Mediterranean coast. In the Île-de-France region, the A10, A6, and A13 motorways are expected to experience significant traffic congestion between late morning and evening. For return journeys, only the northern and western regions are under an orange alert.

Traffic remained heavy on Saturday before easing.

Saturday is also shaping up to be a difficult day for holidaymakers. The highways serving the Atlantic coast, the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, and the Mediterranean coast will see the heaviest traffic congestion. In the Paris region, the A10, A6, and A13 will be particularly congested from early morning until mid-afternoon. However, no major problems are expected for those returning home.

Traffic should gradually return to a smoother pace on Sunday. However, Bison Futé (the French traffic information service) is forecasting slowdowns in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region for those heading out of town in the late afternoon. For those returning home, the main difficulties will be concentrated in the Île-de-France region, particularly on the A10, A6, and A13 motorways, where traffic jams are expected between mid-afternoon and evening.
