Employee representatives at RTE have triggered a formal alert procedure to highlight the risks that heatwave episodes pose to the electricity grid's infrastructure and the safety of its workers. According to the General Confederation of Labour (CGT), several pieces of equipment are insufficiently adapted to the rising temperatures.
Protective measures demanded
The union specifically cites the explosion of two devices at an electrical substation in Finistère at the end of June, while on-call staff were nearby. Staff representatives are demanding an inventory of the most vulnerable equipment and the establishment of safety perimeters to mitigate risks during interventions.
Management is downplaying the seriousness of the situation
RTE confirms that an incident involving two measuring devices did occur at the Squividan electrical substation in Finistère, but states that no damage was reported to people or facilities. The company also assures that no fires caused by its equipment were recorded during the recent heatwave.
The network manager also points out that its investment program provides for 24 billion euros by 2040 in order to modernize the infrastructure and adapt it to the effects of climate change, particularly in the face of the increasing frequency of heat waves.
