Missing minors are on the rise again in France after several years of decline.

The number of reported missing children in France rose sharply in 2025, according to figures published by the Children's Rights Foundation on the occasion of International Missing Children's Day. A total of 40.953 disappearances were reported to law enforcement last year, the equivalent of 112 children reported missing every day. This 6,4% increase marks a break after several years of decline observed since 2021.

The increase primarily concerns runaways, which still account for over 95% of reported cases. In 2025, 38.706 runaways of minors were recorded, representing a 6,2% increase year-on-year. Nearly 38% of these cases involve children under the age of 15. Specialized organizations are raising concerns about the younger age of those affected and the risks of homelessness, exploitation, or abuse to which these minors may be exposed.

Sharp increase in disappearances deemed worrying

Disappearances deemed "worrying" have seen an even more marked increase. According to data from the Ministry of the Interior cited in the report, their number jumped by 18,6% in one year, reaching 1.629 cases. These situations correspond to disappearances in which the safety or physical and psychological integrity of the minor appears to be threatened, particularly in cases of mental health issues, violence, sexual exploitation, or undue influence.

Authorities and associations emphasize that runaways should never be minimized. Behind these departures may lie family conflicts, violence, abuse, or profound psychological distress. In this context, the European emergency hotline 116 000, accessible 24/24, recorded over 49.000 calls in 2025, an increase of more than 18% in one year.
