The Paris prosecutor's office is now investigating more than 100 childcare facilities in the capital following a surge in reports of physical, psychological, and sexual abuse in after-school programs. According to Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau, 84 preschools, around 20 elementary schools, and about 10 daycare centers are currently the subject of at least one legal proceeding.
The case is taking on unprecedented proportions across all Parisian districts. Several youth workers have already been suspended or charged in recent months following complaints filed by families. The courts have also confirmed the opening of several judicial investigations and summonses to appear before the criminal court in certain cases.
A crisis that has become highly political in Paris
The case has now gone far beyond the legal framework and is causing a major crisis for the City of Paris. Since successive revelations concerning certain nursery schools, groups of parents have denounced shortcomings in the reporting procedures and accused the institutions of failing to adequately protect children.
Faced with mounting pressure, the Paris City Hall has already suspended several dozen after-school staff and announced a major reorganization plan for the sector. The new mayor, Emmanuel Grégoire, has promised "total transparency" and the implementation of new control procedures, as this affair has become one of the most explosive issues of the beginning of his term.
