French feminism is transforming, caught between militant commitment and generational divides.

The NousToutes collective has published a comprehensive overview of feminism in France, painting a portrait of a movement profoundly transformed since the #MeToo explosion. The study highlights a new generation of activists who are more present on social media, younger, more politically engaged, and involved in issues that extend far beyond sexual violence alone.

According to data presented by the collective, feminist mobilizations now attract a much more diverse range of people than they did ten years ago. While the fight against gender-based violence remains central, issues related to racism, LGBT+ discrimination, precarious employment, and mental health are playing an increasingly important role in the demands put forward by activists.

A movement that has become more visible but also more fragmented

The study also highlights the major impact of social media in disseminating feminist ideas. TikTok, Instagram, and X now play a central role in activist campaigns, calls to action, and raising awareness about sexual violence. This increased visibility has significantly broadened the audience reached by feminist discourse, particularly among those under 30.

But this evolution is also accompanied by increasingly visible internal tensions. French feminism appears to be marked by sometimes highly contentious debates surrounding issues of identity, anti-racism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the place of trans women in feminist movements. Several controversies have recently pitted different activist organizations against each other on these subjects.

Violence against women remains the primary driving force behind the protests.

Despite these divisions, the fight against gender-based violence remains the main point of convergence for the French feminist movement. For several years, the marches organized by NousToutes have regularly brought together tens of thousands of people across the country.

Feminist groups have also played a significant role in raising awareness of femicides, domestic violence, and institutional failures in victim support. Their influence on public debate has become far greater than before, to the point of permanently placing certain issues on the French political and media agenda.
