The Paris City Council on Tuesday approved a €20 million action plan, spearheaded by Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire, to improve child safety in after-school programs. This decision comes amid a wave of sexual violence cases, which the city government has made a priority since the beginning of its term.
At the time of the vote, around a hundred youth workers and managers from the sector gathered in front of City Hall to denounce their working conditions and demand more human and financial resources. The unions are specifically calling for additional recruitment, better training for staff, and a reduction in job insecurity.
Agents under pressure in the face of suspicions
Since the beginning of the year, 78 officers have been suspended, 31 of them in connection with allegations of sexual violence. This situation is fueling a climate of tension among staff, some of whom report increased pressure and a fear of being wrongly accused in the performance of their duties.
The unions believe the solution lies primarily in increasing staff numbers and training rather than in technical measures like video surveillance, which they consider difficult to implement. A meeting with the municipality is scheduled for this afternoon to discuss these demands.
