The disappearance of traditional magnetic cardboard tickets in the Paris metro and RER will not take place on June 1, 2026. Île-de-France Mobilités has decided to postpone this deadline until the autumn in order to allow travelers to use the last transport tickets still in circulation before the generalization of digital solutions.
This postponement is due to the desire to gradually support users in this digital transition. Paper tickets now represent only 0,15% of validations recorded across the entire network, indicating that the vast majority of travelers have already adopted the new digital formats offered by transport operators.
Heading towards 100% paperless mobility
To replace old tickets, travelers can use the Navigo Easy card, which allows them to load single tickets, or the Navigo Liberté+ offer, which is based on monthly billing for journeys taken. In the longer term, direct payment by bank card on public transport in the Île-de-France region is also among the options being considered by the transport authorities.
Beyond modernizing the network, this evolution should reduce the costs associated with printing, storing, and distributing physical tickets. However, it raises questions about digital inclusion for some users less familiar with digital tools. The end of paper tickets will thus mark a symbolic step in the history of Parisian transport, moving towards a more connected and paperless mobility.
