It's a crazy adventure reported by the British newspaper The Guardian. Mittens, an 8-year-old Maine Coon, unwittingly took three flights in 24 hours after being forgotten in the hold of a plane.
It all began on January 13, when Margo Neas and her family, originally from New Zealand, were moving from Christchurch to Melbourne, Australia. When they arrived at the airport, Mittens’ owner waited for three hours, but her cat was nowhere to be found. Then she received some unlikely news: the plane had left for Christchurch…with Mittens still on board, locked in the hold.
Back in New Zealand, Mittens was picked up by a pet transport company, who arranged for his transfer to Australia. After a total of 7 hours of additional flying, the globetrotting cat was finally reunited with his owner.
“She ran into my arms, snuggled up to me and gave me the biggest hugs ever,” Margo told the Guardian.
If Mittens' story ends well, Air New Zealand has said it will take steps to prevent such an incident from happening again. "We will make sure this doesn't happen again," spokeswoman Alisha Armstrong said.
A memorable episode that will undoubtedly make Mittens one of the most well-traveled cats...
