Choisy-le-Roi: 9,000 people evacuated to neutralize a 500 kg bomb

A 500 kg bomb dating from the Second World War was discovered on Wednesday at a construction site for the Sedif drinking water plant in Choisy-le-Roi. The device, buried for nearly eight decades, requires an exceptionally large-scale bomb disposal operation. Authorities have ordered the immediate evacuation of 9,000 residents in the area, transforming several neighborhoods in the town into restricted zones for the duration of the operation.

An exceptional security device

The security operation mobilizes 600 police officers to manage the evacuation perimeters and ensure the smooth running of operations. The discovery also causes significant disruption to the rail network: the RER C commuter train suspends service in the area, while several other train lines experience cancellations or major delays. Bomb disposal experts are working to secure the device before any attempt to neutralize it.

This type of discovery is not isolated in the Île-de-France region. In March 2025, a similar bomb was found in Saint-Denis, paralyzing the Gare du Nord train station for several hours before the Minister of Transport announced a gradual resumption of service at the end of the day. Explosive remnants of Allied bombings regularly resurface during construction work in the Paris region.
