Amélie-les-Bains introduces a nighttime curfew for minors under 15 years old

Amélie-les-Bains has implemented a nighttime curfew for those under 15. The measure, effective since Sunday, prohibits minors from being out alone between 23 p.m. and 6 a.m. until the start of the school year. Mayor Marie Costa justifies this decision by citing an increase in antisocial behavior by some young people. She denounces what she calls a "pyromania of the atmosphere," referring to a recent fire started by two teenagers in a hard-to-reach area.

A region scarred by fires

The fire broke out last Friday in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Several days after it started, the blaze was still burning on Monday, July 27. The size of the affected area complicated the emergency response, which lasted nearly a week to contain the flames. The department had already experienced a dramatic incident in early July, with a fire that burned 4,900 hectares, according to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez. Thousands of people were evacuated at that time.

The mayor of Amélie-les-Bains hopes that this nighttime curfew will help reduce risky behavior. The curfew will be in effect throughout the summer, considered the most vulnerable period. Families will be required to ensure compliance with this rule or face penalties. The measure primarily aims to prevent new fires in a region already weakened by repeated blazes.
