In Colombes, a World War II bomb leads to the evacuation of thousands of residents

A large-scale bomb disposal operation is underway in Colombes, in the Hauts-de-Seine department, following the discovery of a World War II-era bomb. Thousands of residents were evacuated on Sunday, while approximately 800 personnel were mobilized to secure the area and neutralize the explosive device.

The security perimeter, established 450 meters around the discovery site, was completely sealed off in the morning. Bomb disposal experts began their operation at midday, after evacuating the last residents and clearing the streets in the affected area.

A delicate operation under close surveillance

Within a one-kilometer radius, gatherings are prohibited and numerous emergency resources have been deployed, including law enforcement, firefighters, and rescue organizations. Evacuees have been accommodated in several centers, with specific support provided for the most vulnerable.

The bomb disposal experts are first attempting to remove the bomb's detonator, a technical operation estimated to take several hours. If this fails, a controlled destruction of the device underground is being considered, which would prolong the operation.

An exceptional arrangement until the end of the day

The area remains under close surveillance, including aerial surveillance, to prevent any incidents or malicious acts. Several bus lines have been suspended, and authorities have implemented an alert system to keep residents informed of the evolving situation.

Residents will only be able to return to their homes after the operation is completely finished, expected at the end of the day, once all risks have been eliminated and the area is fully secured.
