July 14th: parades, ceremonies, tributes… France celebrates its national holiday

France celebrates its national holiday this Tuesday, July 14th. As every year, this day is marked by the traditional military parade on the Champs-Élysées, official ceremonies throughout the country, military parades, medal presentations, public dances, and numerous festivities organized by local communities. This date commemorates both the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789, and the Fête de la Fédération (Festival of the Federation) on July 14, 1790, a symbol of national unity.

A parade themed around the "Strategic Awakening of Europe"

In Paris, the military parade begins in the morning on the Champs-Élysées, in the presence of the President of the Republic, the principal state authorities, and numerous foreign guests. The 2026 edition highlights the theme of "Europe's Strategic Awakening." Nearly 8,500 participants are involved, including approximately 6,500 soldiers on foot. The procession also includes nearly 300 vehicles, 95 aircraft, 35 helicopters, and 193 horses from the Republican Guard. The Patrouille de France opens the flypast, while the French Navy, which is celebrating its 400th anniversary this year, plays a significant role in the ceremony.

A unique context due to the World Cup

This national holiday is taking place in an unusual atmosphere. In the evening, the French national team will play their World Cup semi-final against Spain. Several cities have adjusted their schedules to allow the public to watch the match on giant screens. In Paris, the traditional fireworks display at the Eiffel Tower has been exceptionally moved to July 13th. This decision avoids a clash with the French team's semi-final. It also marks the tenth anniversary of the Nice attack of July 14, 2016, which claimed 86 lives.

A major security operation

The festivities are taking place under heightened security. Several thousand police officers, gendarmes, soldiers, and security personnel are deployed, particularly in Paris where the national holiday celebrations coincide with the World Cup semi-final. Secure perimeters, traffic restrictions, access controls, and bans on certain dangerous items are in place to ensure the smooth running of the ceremonies and public gatherings.

Celebrations across France

Beyond Paris, the national holiday is celebrated throughout the country. Many towns and cities organize military and civilian parades, patriotic ceremonies, concerts, public dances, and fireworks displays. However, some municipalities have adjusted their schedules or moved their fireworks to July 13th to accommodate the sporting calendar and allow residents to also enjoy the France-Spain match.
